Rounds 3 & 4 - Cadwell Park - So close yet so far at Cadwell

Absolute Racing arrived at the picturesque Cadwell Park with big expectations after a successful time in rounds one & two at Snetterton in Norfolk. Steve Savage was a close second in the title race after a win and second place. Miguel Pinto Coehlo had some work to do after his DNF in round one meant he missed the second round.

Qualifying went to plan with Steve on pole for race 2 and second on the grid for the opening race of the weekend after Malcolm Scott found a clear lap and pipped Steve for pole. Miguel put in a solid performance and showed his race winning potential with an excellent pair of third place positions.

Andrew Kluge was in for a tough weekend’s racing in only his 3rd ever race on one of the most demanding circuits in Europe. He will start 19th and 20th for the 2 races.

Race 1

A cracking start from Steve meant he led in to Coppice corner with the rest of the pack chasing him down including a fast starting Miguel who was hot on the heals of 2nd place driver Malcolm Scott. Miguel looked for every way possible to snatch 2nd place to give Absolute a 1,2 finish. On lap 5 Miguel made his move and went for a gap down the inside of the hairpin only for Malcolm to shut the door causing quite a bit of damage to Miguel left rear corner.

Steve settled into a excellent pace and never looked  like relinquishing his leading position and crossed the line over 6 seconds ahead of Malcome Scott to score his 2nd win of the season and gain the overall championship lead. Andrew Kluge improved his times every lap in a lonely race to 18th position at the close.

Race 2

As the teams drivers settled into fillet steak at the hotel, Absolute Racing worked into the night get Miguel’s car ready for the 2nd race of the weekend.

The start of race 2 was similar for Steve Savage as he again led the pack through Coppice. Miguel had a bad start as he started to feel problems with his clutch dropping him back to 7th at the end of the first lap.

The race was steady until the leading pack caught the back markers on the 7th lap coming up to Hall bends which allowed Malcolm Scott to take the lead from Savage as they crossed the line. Miguel had made some steady progress up to this point and was in 4th place. Unfortunately for Miguel but fortunately for Steve the race was then red flagged as Barry Pritchard had spun exiting Barn corner and was resting in a dangerous place. With count back Steve would start the re start in pole position but Miguel would have to start from the pit lane due to a clutch failure during the race.

Steve led the re start again and looked like picking up his 2nd win of the weekend till disaster struck on the last lap when he spun at Charlies bend. The team are unsure if the spin was due to a push rod adjuster failure or a slight misfire but the end result was the same. Chris Kite stormed through for his first win of the season and Steve limped home in a disappointing 9th place. The stewards later put Steve back in 11th after another driver “thought” he had finished ahead but video evidence proved that he was wrong but the damage was done and the result could not be changed.

Miguel drove an excellent final 4 laps to move up from 20th on the restart to a fine 6th place finish.

The team will now re group after a disappointing 2nd Cadwell race as we head to another double-header at Brands Hatch.
