Round 7 - Mallory Park - Good weekend but could do better.

Absolute Racing arrived at a hot and humid Mallory Park for round 7 of the 14 round championship in a unfamiliar position, as it was the first meeting of the year that was a single header and without any testing to work on set up. A gamble was taken on basic set up and gear ratios and it seem to work okay for qualifying for championship leader Steve Savage as he managed to put his RF06 Van Diemen in pole (his 4th this season). Miguel struggled a little bit on oldish rubber and would line up a disappointed 7th on the grid.

Steve again struggled to get off the line and slotted into Gerrards in 2nd place behind Chris Kite. Miguel made a steady start and kept his 7th place before dispatching Charles Adrian down to 7th on the 2nd lap. As the leaders crossed the line on the 3rd lap it became clear that Chris Kite was starting to edge away from Steve as he continued to hold off the fast Barry Prichard in a similar Van Diemen RF06. They battled hard for a number of laps until the pressure told on Steve and he put a wheel on the grass at the exit of Gerrards and had a very high-speed spin. He managed to gather his thoughts and continued after losing 4 places, ending lap 14 in 6th place.

With the championship lead looking in doubt Steve made a great recovery to finish in 3rd place as he battled past 2nd in the championship Malcolm Scott with 4 laps remaining. Unfortunately he didn’t manage to get past Jonathan Weston-Taylor as they crossed the finish line just 0.61 seconds apart. Miguel had a pretty uneventful race as he crossed the line in 5th place some 40 seconds down on the race winner Chris Kite, but he did manage to pocket a healthy amount of points to move him up to 6th in the Championship after a tough start to the season.

Next stop is Pembrey in South Wales for another double header
